Overnight Lighthouse Stays: The Most Beautiful Places in Germany
An overnight stay in a lighthouse is an unusual experience: Due to the small base area of the towers, the accommodations are spread over several floors - so you should be fit enough to handle stairs. Additionally, the round shape of the rooms and the fantastic view from the rooms add a special charm.
Adding to this is the often remote location and a touch of seafaring romance: lighthouses are perfect for a romantic hideaway for two. In this article, you'll learn about the most beautiful lighthouses to stay in across Germany.
1. Dagebüll Lighthouse
The Dagebüll lighthouse is the smallest hotel on the North Sea: It can accommodate exactly two people, making it perfect for a romantic hideaway! The square brick tower was built in 1929 and converted into a mini hotel in 2012.
While there is no reception or room service, guests can enjoy a panoramic view from the terrace, a hot tub, and breakfast laid out on the first step in the morning. The interior of the three living levels is modern-luxurious, featuring a well-stocked minibar and hi-fi equipment.
2. Pilot Tower on Usedom
At the southern end of the island of Usedom, right on the Szczecin Lagoon, stands the Usedom pilot tower. Where pilots once guided ships through the lagoon towards Poland or the open Baltic Sea, you can now stay overnight.
The interior of the mini-hotel for two is modern and simple. There is a hot tub and at the top a wrap-around balcony from which you can watch the ships on the lagoon.
It's wonderfully quiet in the former pilot tower because the walls are 50 centimeters thick. The perfect place for a relaxing retreat by the sea. The Karnin pilot tower is nearly 70 years old.
3. Lighthouse Pension on Neuwerk Island
The small island of Neuwerk is located about twelve kilometers northwest of Cuxhaven. You can see its landmark, the lighthouse, from a distance. Inside the tower is a guesthouse with seven rooms, some with private bathrooms, others with shared facilities.
In the breakfast and living room, travelers can chat with one another. Climb 138 steps up a narrow spiral staircase to reach the observation platform 40 meters high. The ascent is worth it for the magnificent views of the mudflats, sea, and mainland.
4. Lighthouse Hotel in Lusatian Lake District
Lighthouses can be found not only by the sea but also inland! Like the lighthouse in the Lusatian Lake District in Saxony. The former lignite mining area, following the flooding of the basins, is one of the largest lake districts in Europe, and the white-and-red lighthouse is its landmark.
The tower belongs to a hotel on Lake Geierswald. The ground floor features a restaurant, and high above at over 22 meters, you can spend the night. Here, you will find the sleeping area of the 'tower room' with a balcony and a 360-degree panoramic view.
It is connected by stairs to the two other floors that belong to the tower room, where there is an experience shower and a toilet.
5. Hollerwettern Lighthouse on the Elbe
You can see the Hollerwettern lighthouse from afar thanks to its bright red color! It is located in Schleswig-Holstein on the Elbe, nestled behind a dike. The historic lighthouse was built in 1911 and features a fully equipped apartment on the ground floor.
In the tower dome, there is a bedroom and a balcony where you can watch the container ships on the Elbe or the colorful sunset over the water.
The lighthouse also has a cozy garden nearby, and there's a beach. Pets are welcome to stay at the Hollerwettern lighthouse.
6. Breege Lighthouse on Rügen
Located directly on Breeger Bodden on Rügen is the blue-and-white Breege lighthouse. It offers an unusual amount of space over five levels and is thus suitable for families. The rooms are cozy and modern, and the kitchen is fully equipped.
From the living room and the balcony, there is a 360-degree view over the Bodden. Nearby, there is the fine sandy beach of Schaabe, which can be reached in about 15 minutes on foot. And if a storm is raging outside, you can keep warm in the sauna.
7. Wilhelmshaven Signal Tower
At the Signalturm Wilhelmshaven, you stay 30 meters above the ground! The tower was erected for the military in 1935 and stands on a lock island surrounded by a biotope. The best view is from the surrounding balcony.
Binoculars are provided to watch the birds in the biotope. The apartment includes a living kitchen and a bedroom with bathroom elements. The sanitary building is a few meters away from the tower. The nearest beach is a ten-minute walk away.
8. Lighthouse in Europapark Rust
Another inland lighthouse, this time in Baden-Württemberg, near the French border: In Europapark Rust, you can stay at the 'Bell Rock' hotel, which includes a lighthouse.
The lighthouse suites have various themes, such as the 'Ahoi Heimat' suite designed by artist Stefan Strumbel. Especially spectacular is the 'John F. Kennedy' suite, which spans two floors and includes a private sauna and its own hot tub.
9. Bad Saarow Water Tower
The Bad Saarow Water Tower in Brandenburg is not technically a lighthouse, but staying in this tower is a comparably great experience. At about 23 meters high, the water tower has a glass top offering a magnificent view of Lake Scharmützelsee and Brandenburg forests.
The cozy hanging chairs up there invite you to relax and unwind. A further design highlight of the water tower is its free-floating fireplace. Overall, the mini-hotel for two consists of four levels, with a small spa area featuring a hot tub.
