On warm summer days during your Bremen trip, you can cool off at Werdersee or enjoy some stand-up paddleboarding.

Summer in the City - and you might need a cool down during your tour of Bremen. The bettercities.net guides you to the most beautiful lakes and reveals where you can swim and stroll.

There's plenty of water in Bremen: Besides the Weser, smaller rivers like the Wümme, Ochtum, and Lesum also flow through the state. But which bodies of water are suitable for a swim, a stroll, or water sports? We take you on a tour of the six most beautiful lakes in Bremen and show you where the best beaches and coves are located.

All six lakes are easily accessible from the city center, making them perfect for a nature getaway. They offer a certain infrastructure - sanitary facilities, snacks, or options to rent sports equipment and explore the water by stand-up paddleboarding or canoeing.

1. Werdersee

Werdersee, Bremen
Werdersee is actually a separate branch of the Weser.

Our number one of the most beautiful lakes in Bremen is strictly speaking not a lake at all. Werdersee is, if you want to be precise, a separated branch of the Weser. In Bremen, where this branch grows into a kind of lake, it is known as one of the most popular local recreation areas. The bathing bay with its coarse sandy beach is especially popular, where sunbathers gather in the summer.

Werdersee is also a great spot for cooling off: According to 'Bremen erleben', the water quality is excellent. You can relax on the beach and meadow and swim a few laps in the water. You can also conquer Werdersee with a SUP, canoe, or rowboat. You can easily launch your boat from the jetties in the bathing bay.

You're well taken care of at Werdersee: Besides a bathing supervision, there are restrooms, a snack bar, and parking. Also nearby are some local spots like the excursion café 'Zum Kuhhirten' and a playground.

2. Stadtwaldsee or Unisee

In Bremen's largest quarry lake, you can swim and splash around. There's a separate water sports area for surfers, and a SUP station is available.

The Stadtwaldsee is also known as Unisee. Located near the university, students particularly enjoy taking a dip here. But it is also a popular destination for all residents of Bremen. On the southern shore, you'll find the largest sandy beach, and on the eastern side, a smaller one with a naturist area. There's also a non-swimming section. Near the lake, there are restrooms, parking, and a beer garden called 'Haus am Walde'.

Also on the edge of the lake are the 'Hanse Camping Bremen' site and the 'Uni-Wildnis' nature reserve with its small ponds. So, you can go exploring around the water if you get bored lounging on the beach. Besides the 'Uni-Wildnis' and Stadtwald, the large Bürgerpark with another lake, Holler See, is also nearby. You can go for a stroll, but also boating or play mini-golf.

An afternoon at the lake with friends or family can therefore easily be combined with another leisure activity. In the summer, concerts and other open-air events occasionally happen at Stadtwaldsee.

3. Mahndorfer See

On the southeastern edge of town, you come across another smaller bathing lake. The Mahndorfer See in the district of the same name invites swimming and relaxation. The long sandy beach is particularly beautiful here, which is monitored by a bathing supervision during the season. There's also a non-swimmer area. Restrooms and a kiosk are nearby. According to 'Bremen erleben', barbecuing is also permitted on the meadows.

The landscape around Mahndorfer See is beautiful - birds nest on two islands. The water quality is also said to be excellent. The car noise from the nearby A1 might be bothersome, which is due to the lake's history: Like other Bremen quarry lakes, Mahndorfer See was created during the construction of highways in the '60s and '70s.

Even though the lake is a bit out of the way, it's easily accessible by public transport, for example by streetcar line 1. If you're driving, you can park at the Bollener Kirchweg parking lot.

4. Waller Feldmarksee

Waller Feldmarksee
The Waller Feldmarksee is located in the Gröpelingen district.

The Waller Feldmarksee in the Gröpelingen district is also a little gem. It's about a 20-minute drive from downtown.

In summer, it mainly attracts bathers. The lake, surrounded by meadows and ditches, is also popular with walkers. If you want to get out of the city and into nature, Waller Feldmarksee is a good choice - especially because it borders the idyllic, agriculture-dominant Blockland, one of the most popular destinations for residents of Bremen in the 'Untere Wümme' nature reserve. At the lake, you hear little noise from the nearby A27.

To the northwest of the lake, you reach a sandy beach, adjacent to a sunbathing area. There are also a few play equipment, a mobile kiosk, seasonally a bathing supervision, and a non-swimmer area. The lake is also popular with surfers - a launching area has been set up for them to enter the water with their boards. Waller Feldmarksee is reputed to be one of the cleanest lakes in the Bremen state.

5. Sportparksee Grambke

The Sportparksee is the newest among Bremen's lakes: It was only excavated in 2002 and opened for bathing three years later. Also at the Sportparksee, which lies northwest of Bremen City in Grambke near some golf clubs, a large bathing beach and many small coves attract bathers, especially in summer. The water quality is also said to be excellent at Sportparksee.

Around the lake, a hiking trail leads - the area is also great for longer walks. Otherwise, the name speaks for itself: Whether it's surfing, sailing, diving, fishing, or rowing - water sports are the focus at Sportparksee Grambke. There's also a beach volleyball court, a surf school, and several water sports clubs like the Tura Bremen e.V., the contact for canoe tours.

During the bathing season and during sporting events, DLRG lifeguards monitor the body of water. Barbecuing is not allowed at Sportparksee, according to the organization that manages and organizes the area.

6. Sodenmattsee

The Sodenmattsee is also one of Bremen's most popular quarry lakes. It is located in the southwest in the Huchting district and Sodenmatt locality. It is surrounded by plenty of green and many small walking paths. If you want to jump into the water, the western shore of the lake is the most exciting place for you: There is a swimming bay with a sandy beach.

Do you prefer a shady spot rather than a swim in the blazing sun? Sodenmattsee is your area. Because: Surrounded by trees, the area offers many lovely places to find a pleasant spot in the shade on hot days.

If you're more a fan of barbecue ceremonies, settle on the eastern shore of the lake. There is a grilling area, and barbecuing is not allowed in other areas around the lake. Otherwise, the infrastructure around Sodenmattsee is good. You'll find restrooms, a snack bar, fishing jetties, and a playground. In summer, there's also a bathing supervision at the lake.

Besides our Top 6 Bremen lakes, there are other small lakes where you can swim or take a walk. These include near the city of Bremen the Bultensee, Achterdieksee and the Rottkuhle, which is considered Bremen's smallest bathing lake and is located in the old village core of Arbergen.

Near Bremerhaven, but no longer on Bremen territory, but already in Lower Saxony, excursions are particularly attracted to Bülter See and Sellstedter See.
