Almond Blossom: Why You Should Visit Palatinate in Spring
To experience the almond blossom, you don't need to travel to Mallorca, Cyprus, or the Algarve: In Germany, specifically in the Palatinate, spring is almond-pink! We present the most beautiful destinations during the almond blossom season.
Every year in March and April, the almond trees in the Palatinate bloom in white and pink, transforming the German region into a fragrant sea of blossoms. Thanks to the mild climate, figs, kiwis, and citrus fruits grow in the Palatinate - and so do almonds. The almond blossoms are not only beautiful to look at, but they are also the unmistakable sign that winter is finally over.
Incidentally, almond trees have a long tradition in the Palatinate. They were first documented as early as the eleventh century. Later, Elector Frederick I ordered almond and walnut trees to be planted between the vines. The trees were intended to provide winegrowers with an additional source of income.

A shorter alternative to experience the almond blossom on foot is the 'Maikammer Circular Route'. This path takes you through the towns of Maikammer, Kirrweiler, and St. Martin with their historic sights. Along the way, there are numerous viewpoints offering stunning views of the blooming almond trees.
Tip: Bring a picnic to enjoy at one of the many picnic spots under the almond trees. For the approximately 9-mile-long tour, you should plan about four hours. During the almond blossom, 'pink' guided walks and hikes are also held here.
Flag Tower Near Bad Dürkheim
South of Bad Dürkheim lies the Flag Tower, which the locals affectionately call 'little coffee mill' because of its shape. Why should a visit be on your bucket list for the almond blossom? From up here, you have a breathtaking view of the pink sea of blossoms at your feet.
The Flag Tower has been around since 1854. At that time, more and more people came to Bad Dürkheim for spa treatments, and the tower was built to offer them a destination in nature. Today, a one-kilometer-long path through vineyards leads from the road to the tower.
Pink Glow
The color pink not only dominates the Palatinate during the day during the almond blossom. When dusk falls, many historic landmarks along the German Wine Route and the Palatinate Almond Trail glow pink. The 'Pink Glow' during the 'Almond Weeks' in March and April has been taking place since 2010.
Castles and palaces were first illuminated pink back in 1998! As part of his art project 'Castle Glow', artist Michael Seyl creatively illuminated twelve castles in pink for three months in the evenings. During the 'Pink Glow', landmarks such as the Wachtenburg, the German Wine Gate, the Hambach Castle, and Landeck Castle are illuminated.

Magnificent almond trees with pale pink blossoms line Villa Street in Edenkoben. Although the road is no longer a secret tip, the visit is worthwhile. It simply makes you happy to walk along the avenue and take in the color spectacle. If you want more exercise, you can take the approximately three-mile-long circular trail to Rhodt and back.
There is also an almond blossom festival on Villa Street, where local winemakers present their fine products at drink and food stands. The date of the festival always depends on the blossom stage and is published on the City of Edenkoben website. It usually takes place in March.
In 2025, the Almond Mile in Edenkoben will take place on the weekends of March 8 and 9, March 15 and 16, and March 22 and 23. The event hours are from 11 AM to 6 PM each day.
