Luxury Train Costa Verde Express: Spain's Alternative to the Orient Express
It is the king of trains: a ride on the famous Orient Express is on many people's bucket list, but the trip on this luxury train is nearly unaffordable. A night on the Orient Express averages 4,000 euros. However, there is a slightly more affordable alternative, which we would like to introduce to you.
This is the Costa Verde Express
The focus is on the Costa Verde Express in Spain. It was previously known as El Transcantábrico Clásico, and its interior bears a strong resemblance to the luxurious ambiance of the Orient Express. The train travels through northern Spain from Bilbao to Santiago de Compostela and back. The following places are on the route:
Bilbao - Santander - Cabezón de la Sal - Santillana del Mar - Llanes - Cavadonga - Arriondas - Gijón - Oviedo - Candás - Avilés - Luarca - Ribadeo - Viveiro - Ferrol - Santiago de Compostela
You can choose between a five-day and a six-day trip and enjoy the ride along the Spanish Atlantic coast in this noble train. The carriages are clad in wood, and each room has its own bathroom. The windows have heavy curtains that can be drawn closed. By the way, you can sleep soundly at night because the train only runs during the day.
The Costa Verde Express has a total of 23 Grand Class rooms for 46 guests. They are equipped with a double bed, minibar, wardrobe, and desk.
Traditional Spanish dishes are served on board, offering a mix of Galician, Asturian, and Basque cuisine. Dining takes place in one of the four lounges of the Costa Verde Express, where the evening program is also held.
What does a trip on the Costa Verde Express cost?
And what does the fun cost? Although it is cheaper than a trip on the Orient Express, the Costa Verde Express remains a luxury train: a trip in a double cabin starts at 4,500 euros per person - you do get a five- or six-day trip for the price you would pay for a night on the Orient Express.
The price includes a welcome drink, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, activities on board, excursions, and a guide.
These are the other luxury trains in Spain
The Costa Verde Express is not the only luxury train puffing through Spain. There's also the Transcantabrico, which begins slightly earlier in Donostia-San Sebastian. The rest of the route remains roughly the same as that of the Costa Verde Express. The furnishings are also very elegant and luxurious.
With the Expreso La Robla, you also travel through northern Spain, but below the Costa Verde route. The start is also in Bilbao, and it continues over Frías, Frómista, and La Olmeda to León and Cuevas de Valporquero. The Al Andalus travels through Andalusia and stops in places like Seville, Córdoba, Cádiz, Ronda, and Granada over seven days.
