Prices of basic goods, housing, transport, inflation... Based on these indicators, ECA International has compiled a list of the most expensive cities in the world, reports CNN on Wednesday 8 June. Each year, this company carries out studies to help companies calculate the cost of living for their expatriate employees or those on international mobility. Specifically, the specialists compare a basket of similar consumer goods and services commonly purchased by employees on assignment abroad.
Unsurprisingly, Hong Kong tops the list for the third year in a row, followed by many Asian cities, making Asia the continent with the most expensive cities in the world. Tokyo (second), Shanghai (eighth), Guangzhou (ninth) and Seoul (tenth) are in the top 10.

Paris is no longer among the 30 most expensive cities in the world
A Middle Eastern city, Tel Aviv, is also in the top 10, in sixth place. It was on the top step of the podium according to the ranking of the most expensive cities in the world, this time by The Economist Intelligence Unit, published last December. But Covid, inflation, the strength or weakness of currencies, the international context of the war in Ukraine, and the shortage of certain raw materials, may have shifted the lines in a few months.
New York, in second place, is the only American city in the top 10. No French city is included. Paris, which one might expect to find in this type of classification, has left the top 30. But there are many European destinations: two Swiss cities, Geneva (in third place) and Zurich (in seventh place), and one British city, London. No African cities are included in the list.
