Various Italian towns and cities organise ad hoc events for Halloween night. These are events and tours linked to macabre tales and mysterious characters, scary stories and places shrouded in legend.

One alternative is to visit ghost towns in Italy: Italy's ghost towns. In Basilicata there is the mythical Craco, abandoned in curious circumstances and never repopulated, Valle Piola in Abruzzo, Bussana Vecchia in Liguria, Codera in Lombardy, Fabbriche di Careggine in Tuscany, Roscigno Vecchia in Cilento and many more.

Halloween is approaching and, between fancy dress parties and terror tours, you are spoilt for choice. Where to go on Halloween in Italy?

Gardaland for the occasion is back with a new edition of Gardaland Magic Halloween: every Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the month and during the long weekend from 29 October to 1 November the Park will be transformed thanks to the many themed decorations, the specially created shows and the presence of zombies, witches and vampires ready to surprise visitors on Halloween.

In the beautiful village of Castell'Arquato, the series of events dedicated to Halloween will be repeated on the last weekend of October.

Activities for children, adults and spirit lovers will be held in the streets of the village, inside the Rocca Viscontea and at the municipal wine shop of Castell'Arquato. All information can be found at this link.

Italy is teeming with castles that are wonderful to visit throughout the year (you can find a guide to Italy's most beautiful castles here) and many of them organise very special evenings for Halloween night.

In the Castles of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza there is a full programme of guided tours and entertainment for children, with mystery stories and candlelight dinners. On the official website Halloween in the Castle you will find the complete calendar with the programme for Halloween.

At the castle of Castrocaro (in the province of Forlì) you can take a very special tour of the castle's rooms and secret places. The visit starts at 8.30 p.m. and goes on until late into the night. The exploration is by candlelight and accompanied by disturbing stories and legends about the people who have lived within these walls.

In the villages of Putignano and Triora , horror-themed nights are organised for young and old.

Also in Corinaldo (in the province of Ancona) the Witches' Festival is staged, with an agenda full of events. In Leri Cavour, an abandoned village in the province of Vercelli, you can take part in a guided tour through the uninhabited streets of the village.
