  • Best time to visit: Melbourne is perfect to visit all year round. In summer (austral) for the beautiful sunny days and the many events; in autumn for the foliage and the fairs; in spring the parks and botanical gardens are in bloom and the temperatures are very pleasant; winter (our summer) is ideal for those who don't like the heat, to visit the museums and admire the beautiful sunsets over the sea.

  • Period to avoid: there is no real period to avoid, you simply have to choose according to the type of holiday you are interested in. Let's say that the low season corresponds to our summer (austral winter).

melbourne australia citta Melbourne's climate is subtropical oceanic, characterised by mild winters and warm summers, but influenced by north-south currents. It is not difficult to find extremely cold winter days due to cold air masses arriving from Antarctica, or very hot summer days due to hot, dry air from central Australia, which is mainly occupied by desert. It is important to remember that the seasons are reversed with respect to Italy: summer runs approximately from December to mid-March, winter from late May to August.

Being in the south, partly directly on the sea, the wind is very frequent throughout the year. In fact, all around the city, you can find many beaches where you can try your hand at surfing.

Finally, the annual rainfall is not very heavy but well distributed throughout the year, so there is no distinction between a dry season and a rainy season as in northern Australia. On average, 650 mm falls annually.

When it's cheapest to go to Melbourne

Generally late February/early March, when summer comes to an end and gives way to autumn. Temperatures start to drop in the city and rainfall increases. However, this is a good trade-off, as some days can still be warm for enjoying the beach, while cooler days can be spent visiting museums or attractions.

Melbourne in Spring

citta skyline boulevard verde Spring is quite a variable season: the beginning of the season is very cool and as we get closer to summer the temperatures start to rise, but the city is still affected by cold air masses from the south. November is a good compromise, as the days are milder but still not as hot as summer! This period is good for visiting Melbourne's wonderful museums and enjoying the warmer days in the city's great parks, especially the Royal Botanic Gardens, which are in full bloom! Also, don't miss the chance tomeet the local wildlife at the Healesville Sanctuary or watch the Penguin Parade on Phillip Island (best time between November and March, which then lasts all summer until early autumn).

In spring, the city wakes up from the cold and there is no shortage of great events! In November, the Melbourne Grand Prix is held in Albert Park, right in the heart of the city, but there is also no shortage of great music events, such as the Port Fairy Spring Festival or the Melbourne International Jazz Festival! Finally, October sees the much-awaited Spring Fling Street Festival, with shows, entertainment, events and good food!

Melbourne in Summer

melbourne spiaggia australia ocean Summer is definitely one of the best seasons to visit Melbourne, because of the great amount of activities to do! The only downside is that you can find some really scorching days, due to the hot air masses coming in from the north, from the great Australian desert. But during this time you can enjoy the beach life, including relaxation, surfing and other water sports in St. Kilda, Albert Park and Brighton! In the city you can also enjoy a scenic cruise or attend one of the many events at Fed Square. In addition, the days are very long, so it is also a perfect time for a day trip on the road to explore the wonderful Great Ocean Road and the 12 Apostles!

Moreover, summer is the season of great festivals and events! Tennis fans certainly can't miss theAustralian Open, held every year in Melbourne in the third and fourth week of January. All kinds of festivals take place throughout the summer, both in the city centre and on the beaches, such as the St Kilda Festival in February, or the Summer Sounds Festival, also in February!

Melbourne in the autumn

city skyline during night timeAutumn in Melbourne starts in March and is generally mild, always allowing for possible cold days due to air masses coming in from the south. March is in fact a great compromise, with the end of summer and days that are less hot, but still allow for relaxing at the beach! This period is also perfect for enjoying beautiful walks in the city's great parks, such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, where the foliage effect will leave you speechless. But that's not all: take the ferry to Williamstown, where there is a lovely autumn weekend market (don't miss the hot apple fritters while admiring the Melbourne skyline in the distance) or visit the Yarra Valley and its vineyards!

There's no shortage of great events this season either , especially cultural ones! In late May there is the Melbourne International Arts Festival, while in late April and early May you can attend the Melbourne Autumn Music Festival. Meanwhile, just outside the city in late April is The Bright Autumn Festival, a 10-day festival celebrating the beauty of autumn, its colours and local produce at this time of year!

Melbourne in Winter

melbourne citta notte australia Winter is the coldest season of the year, generally beginning in late May and ending in August. Temperatures are fairly mild, but the wind from the south increases the feeling of cold. On colder days you can find shelter in museums, among the works of the National Gallery of Victoria, or with the little ones discover the SEA LIFE Aquarium. If you love sport, then don't miss the chance to watch a footy match at Marvel Stadium in Docklands or a rugby match at AAMI Park.

We generally get used to Christmas lights and hot chocolate in winter, but in Australia Christmas is celebrated in the middle of summer. For this reason, in July, many venues celebrate'Christmas in July', a kind of Christmas in July, with small events or special dishes! Apart from this little interlude, there are still plenty of events in Melbourne: at Victoria Market, one of the city's most popular markets, the Winter Night Market is held throughout the season, with events and food stalls, while the Winter Solstice Festival is held to celebrate the arrival of the season!
