Not Even 20 Square Meters: Here Stands the World's Smallest Hotel
What used to conduct electricity now invites you to dream: The world's smallest hotel is located in Bad Segeberg, Schleswig-Holstein. The former transformer house measures just about 18 square meters and has been converted into a complete accommodation that offers space for two people.
The tiny hotel spans three floors and offers several amenities for a cozy stay: a compact kitchenette with a small seating area and a modern bathroom with a rain shower. The double bed is located on the top floor-right under a fully glass roof. This allows guests to gaze at the starry sky at night. The price for an overnight stay in this small refuge starts at 229 euros.
The transformer house is located in Bad Segeberg, about 31 miles northeast of Hamburg. It opened in June 2022 and was entered into the Guinness Book of Records the following year.
Title Forfeited: The Eh'häusl in Bavaria
Until then, the 53-square-meter Eh'häusl in Amberg still held the title as the world's smallest hotel. It came about almost 300 years ago and has a unique story: In 1728, the rule in Amberg was that only those with their own property could marry. A resourceful young man refused to be deterred by this-and quickly purchased a building gap just 2.5 meters wide in Seminar Alley.
He raised walls at the front and back, put a roof on top, and the narrow little house was finished. It served as official proof of ownership, clearing the way for marriage. In the following years, the mini-house changed hands frequently, always for the same purpose: to help young couples get married. It eventually received its now well-known name: Eh'häusl-the Marriage House.
