Insider Tips: Discovering Amsterdam Beyond the Canals
Already familiar with Amsterdam? Bridges, canals, and historic facades are old news for you? The Dutch metropolis has so much more to offer. Here are ten insider tips.
Amsterdam is among the most popular cities for a short trip. Clearly, the Dutch capital has a lot to offer. Aside from the familiar sights and canal cruises, there are some hidden gems that make your city trip truly special, away from the tourist crowds.
Ever wonder how to blend in as a tourist, what the best local delicacies are, or which attractions are lesser-known? We present ten unique highlights away from the main hot spots.
1. Amsterdam-West with the Westergasfabriek
About a 30-minute walk from the city center, west of the canal belt, lies this charming area: The houses and canals in Amsterdam-West are just as beautiful as those in the center, but it's not as crowded yet - you're likely to encounter far fewer tourists on a stroll.
An interesting spot here is the old gasworks, the Westergasfabriek. It hosts numerous events throughout the year. A culinary highlight in the west is the Foodhallen, home to a street food market.
2. Cycle to Ouderkerk aan de Amstel
Of course, cycling is a must. Amsterdam is world-renowned for its excellent cycling infrastructure. This way, you can easily explore popular sights or regions, including some lesser-known ones.
A lovely excursion is to the historic village of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, about six miles south of Amsterdam's city center.
Since the twelfth century, this area has attracted visitors with its unique attractions, such as particularly beautiful and impressive churches. One church was built in the 18th century, and a Neo-Gothic church dates back to the 19th century. At the Portuguese-Jewish cemetery Beth Haim, you'll find unique gravestones.
3. NDSM Wharf - Art and Culture
In 1978, the shipyard Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (NDSM) was shut down. The area fell into disrepair but has since become a cultural insider hub. Cool bars, restaurants, studios, and galleries create a unique vibe - old halls are being rejuvenated.
To see it for yourself, you can catch a free ferry behind Amsterdam Central Station. It takes just ten minutes to reach the NDSM Wharf.
4. The Picturesque City of Haarlem
This picturesque city is just a 20-minute train ride from Amsterdam. It's rich in history and culture, with a selection of charming shops, cafes, and restaurants.
The beach is also nearby - less than six miles to the North Sea coast, perfectly accessible by bike through dune landscapes. Plus, the Spaarne River flows here.
5. Vondelpark - Relax in Greenery
Looking for some green relaxation? Then Vondelpark is worth a visit. This green oasis is a protected landscape stretching 47 hectares. Since 1865, locals have sought refuge from the city hustle and bustle here.
Once you pass through the gate with its golden letters, you'll feel like you've stepped into another world: Quiet corners with park benches, lovely ponds, expansive lawns, and a magnificent rose garden invite relaxation. With a picnic blanket in hand, you're all set.
6. Rondvaart op de Vecht
For a real feel of the city's spirit, a guided boat tour along the canals is perfect. There are plenty of options available. If Amsterdam's city tours are too crowded, try a 'Rondvaart op de Vecht.'
You just have to travel a few miles to Nieuwersluis. The idyllic boat ride offers plenty of sightseeing, just like the major tours - including atmospheric night tours, enjoying a candlelit dinner with 'wine.'
7. Muiderslot - A Fairytale Experience
Amsterdam has its fair share of castles and palaces, offering a fascinating peek into the country's royal past. A real gem is located about 9 miles southeast of Amsterdam: Muiderslot in North Holland is a 13th-century castle with five towers, a moat, and a classic drawbridge - it looks like a fairy tale!
The castle now houses a museum, charmingly telling stories from bygone days.
8. Order Broodje Haring
A real culinary highlight and insider tip is this fish dish: Broodje Haring. This delicacy can be found citywide at many small stands.
This specialty is a small herring sandwich, topped with pickles and onions. Incidentally, it tastes best between May and July - when the fish is especially sweet.
9. Hembrugterrein - A Creative Oasis
In the Zaandam district lies the former ammunition factory, Hembrugterrein. Now known as Het HEM, it has transformed into a genuine cultural haven, featuring museums, restaurants, and art venues. Numerous exhibition spaces showcase local artists.
One room is furnished like a living room, with a library, reading tables, and outside a lovely lake terrace. The adjoining hi-fi record bar offers great music, and when hunger strikes, the restaurant Europa has you covered.
10. Blend in while Cycling
To explore Amsterdam and its surrounding areas, it's best to leave your car behind. Narrow one-way streets and high parking fees are just two reasons. Better options include walking, or taking the tram and bus. Day passes are available for 7 Euros.
Cycling, or 'Fietsen,' is especially charming. Since nearly everyone cycles here, try to keep pace and stay with the flow to avoid getting caught up. To blend in while biking, a black bike is ideal.
