When booking a flight, you may have noticed that you can either enter the departure and arrival location or the airport code, which is the specific three-letter code for each airport. These codes are issued by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The three-letter code is generally based on the first letters of the city or airport in English. Over time, countless combinations have emerged, and some are quite amusing.

Nine Airport Codes That Spark Laughter

The internet is amused by these codes, but Arjun Kavi finds one thing disappointing: There's no connection between 'Oh my God' in Namibia and 'Laughing Out Loud' in Nevada.

  • PIE, which translates to 'pie' in English. The airport's marketing team plays on this joke and chose an equally humorous domain: fly2pie.com; so, fly for pie.
  • LOL.
  • Namibia screams 'Oh my God' with its airport code OMG.
  • PEE. In English, this means something as simple as urinate.
  • POO, the counterpart to the English 'pee.'
  • USA sounds harsher than it is: The airport code is BAD.
  • SUX. The letters themselves aren't exciting, but they sound like the English word 'suck': to suck = to be awful. The marketing team also plays on this gag by selling merchandise with 'Fly SUX': Flying sucks.
  • DIK, often associated with the English word 'dick,' which is a colloquial term for the male genitalia.
  • SEX.
