1. Le Bon
Lots of wood, lots of blue and grey, plus a pinch of industrial chic. With its minimalist Scandinavian design, the interior of the Le Bon restaurant in Kreuzberg's Gräfekiez district is up to date in terms of style. The same goes for breakfast.
A small but fine selection, oriented towards sophisticated world taste: Eggs Benedict with avocado and salmon, pancakes with vanilla cream, warm banana bread, freshly squeezed juices, granola compositions. Everything homemade, everything beautifully arranged. This goes down well despite the comparatively small portions. Walk-ins have almost no chance of getting a seat, so book well in advance.
Le Bon | Address: Boppstraße 1, 10967 Berlin | Opening hours: daily from 9:30 a.m.
2. Sugar fairy
Café Zuckerfee is about the cutest thing Prenzlauer Berg has to offer when it comes to breakfast. In this small room filled with nostalgia and childhood cosiness, whose furnishings are reminiscent of a Victorian merchant's shop, breakfast is all the more sumptuous.
The creations have names like "Suger Plum Fairy" or "La Fe's Dragée" and are served lovingly arranged on colourful etagères. The bread, mini croissants or jam are of course homemade. A place that everyone leaves feeling full, happy and dreamy. Definitely make a reservation.
Zuckerfee | Address: Greifenhagenerstraße 15, 10437 Berlin | Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
3. House of Small Wonder
The New York in address has finally made it to Berlin. From the outside, the centrally located but hidden café looks rather unspectacular, which makes the surprise effect all the stronger when you enter. The House of Small Wonder is not just any breakfast place, but a kind of secret garden that you reach via an enchanted spiral staircase.
Lots of wood, lots of plants, pastel shades mixed with a touch of bird-of-paradise exoticism - that's the concept. American-Japanese fusion cuisine is served. These are pancakes, omelettes, mueslis or sandwiches, spiced up with a Far Eastern twist. Comfort food in organic quality. All in all, an interesting mix that is unique in Berlin.
House of Small Wonder | Address: Johannisstraße 20, 10117 Berlin | Opening hours: Monday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
4. Bastard
Homemade bread that smells delicious and tastes wonderful can often be found in the better cafés. But Bastard is the best at this art of all. What's more, vegans get their money's worth here. Their breakfast is a plate packed to the brim with spreads, grilled vegetables, salad and fresh fruit, so attractively arranged that even the biggest meat lovers spontaneously change their minds.
But even if they don't, there are of course scrambled eggs with plenty of ham and cheese on the extensive menu. Because Bastard offers just about everything your heart desires while remaining so beautifully down-to-earth, it is one of the most popular breakfast addresses in Kreuzberg.
Restaurant Bastard | Address: Reichenberger Straße 122, 10999 Berlin | Opening hours: Thursday to Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
5. Katies Blue Cat
Katies Blue Cat is the best place for those who crave Anglo-American delicacies. Here you'll find scones with clotted cream, crumpets with butter, luscious bagels, cheddar cheese sandwiches, cinnamon buns, New York cheesecake, shortbread and much more.
All of this is made by hand every day in the small backroom bakery. On top of that, they have also mastered the fine art of making coffee. The beans used come directly from the farmer, are free of chemical fertilisers and roasted according to the special wishes of the two owners. It's just a shame that the café, located between Neukölln and Kreuzberg, is so small, because during the winter months you have to be lucky to get a seat inside.
Katies Blue Kat | Address: Friedelstraße 31, 12047 Berlin | Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
6. Sets
If you like it opulent and sophisticated, Sets in Charlottenburg is the place to go. Fine parquet flooring, chandeliers, stucco and delicately striped wallpaper provide West Berlin elegance. A picture showing the rear view of a naked woman provides the necessary contrast so that all this doesn't come across as too cloying. You may or may not think it's a good idea.
It certainly applies to the breakfast, which can be ordered at any time of day. Large trays, overloaded with salmon, cheese, sausage, fig mustard, grapes, antipasti, nuts, tomatoes, sourdough bread and muesli variations leave nothing to be desired. Add a glass of prosecco and everything is perfect.
Sets | Address: Schlüterstraße 36, 10629 Berlin | Opening hours: Monday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
7. Silo coffee
Supposedly, this place serves the best coffee in town, which is of course debatable. But everyone agrees that the breakfast served at Silo Coffee is one of the more unusual ones. They offer organic soul food with an Australian twist, mostly served in cast-iron pans.
These include pancakes with ricotta and berries, scalloped eggs with spinach, avocado toast, crispy bacon with a chickpea version of baked beans. The café itself is skilfully clean, with minimalist wood-and-stone furnishings and a bicycle hanging on the wall as the only decoration. As an overall urban concept, Silo is definitely one of the top addresses in Friedrichshain when it comes to good breakfast and special coffee.
Silo Coffe | Address: Gabriel-Max-Straße 4, 10245 Berlin | Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
8. Winter Garden Café in the House of Literature
The villa, built in 1889 and only one side street away from the bustling Ku'Damm, seems like a green oasis in the middle of the noisy city with its listed garden. Since the end of the 1980s, the Literaturhaus with its café has been a refuge for aesthetes, business people and the shopping exhausted.
Readings are held here in the evenings, and until 2 pm you can have a wonderful breakfast surrounded by the intellectual atmosphere of the Gründerzeit. In the meantime, they have also adapted to the current zeitgeist, so that in addition to the usual classics, quinoa and amaranth muesli are also on the menu.
Literaturhaus | Address: Fasanenstraße 23, 10719 Berlin | Opening hours: daily from 9 a.m. to midnight
9. Breakfast Market in Markthalle 9
Every Sunday - but not every Sunday - the breakfast market of the usual hustle and bustle takes place in the historic Kreuzberg Markthalle 9. The large selection of restaurateurs and traders offering their specialities here at nicely designed stalls does not necessarily make the choice easy.
From freshly squeezed wheatgrass juice to Vietnamese porridge and poached eggs, almost everything is available here. The finest coffee is served, prepared by the best baristas in town. And if your eyes are bigger than your stomach again, you can stock up on anything you like and simply continue eating at home.
Markthalle 9 | Address: Eisenbahnstraße 42-43, 10997 Berlin | Opening hours: irregular on Sundays, check dates online.
