Families Share Their Favorite Beaches in Greece
A relaxing day at the beach is possible in many places in Greece. But where is the best for families? In a survey, 500 locals voted for their favorite beaches. Here are the top 5.
With more than 3,000 islands and 8,700 miles of coastline, Greece is a paradise for sun lovers. Even in the fall, the beaches attract numerous tourists due to the country's warm climate. But which are the best beaches for a family day?
This insider knowledge was shared by 500 Greeks in a survey by vacation rental provider FeWo-direkt. Along with their favorite beaches in Crete, Chalkidiki, Elafonisos, and the Peloponnese, Greek families also revealed their most important item for a long day at the beach: food.
Food at the Beach: What Greek Families Bring
According to 69 percent of respondents, adequate water is a must. The ultimate beach day hack of the locals is to place the water bottle in the freezer before heading to the beach. Thus, three-quarters of Greek families simply freeze the water to enjoy a cool drink throughout the day.
Around 67 percent of the locals also bring fresh fruit, and 66 percent pack sandwiches, which in Greece take the form of a filled pita bread. Fully equipped, they most enjoy visiting the following beaches.
1st Place: Elafonisi in Crete
Regarding Elafonisi Beach in Crete, Greek families agree: 57 percent voted it as the number one spot. This picture-perfect beach is special due to its pink-tinted sand, colored by crushed shells, and its shape. The protected area is divided into two parts by the sea, giving the impression of a split island. The shallow lagoon between the two island sections provides a real Caribbean feel and lots of swimming fun for kids.
2nd Place: Voidokilia on the Peloponnese Peninsula
With 42 percent of the votes, Voidokilia Beach on the Peloponnese Peninsula lands in second place. This so-called Oxbelly Bay can be found on the coast of Messinia. It is especially known for its horseshoe shape and turquoise-blue water. Bathers and adventurers alike have fun here, as there is a hiking route along the beach leading past the legendary Cave of King Nestor. Additionally, the Gialova Lagoon is nearby, home to more than 250 bird species.
2nd Place: Armenistis Beach in Chalkidiki
Receiving the same number of votes as Voidokilia Beach, Armenistis Beach: 42 percent of Greek families elected it as their favorite. The beach with golden sand and turquoise-blue water stretches nearly two kilometers in the northern Greek region of Chalkidiki, with the holy Mount Athos visible on the horizon.
Due to its width and secluded location, the beach is rarely crowded. Its gently sloping shore provides carefree swimming fun, especially for families with small children. Additionally, the southern part offers a wide selection of cafes, restaurants, and bars, making a day at the beach well-rounded.
4th Place: Simos on Elafonisos Island
Simos Beach on Elafonisos Island is composed of not one but two beaches - if you look closely. This twin beach on the southern coast of the Peloponnese offers clear waters for diving and snorkeling, as well as shade from an adjacent cedar forest, securing it at fourth place with 32 percent of the votes.
Behind the beaches lie small and large sand dunes, where you can experience a truly special natural spectacle. Crushed shells create pink spots in the otherwise white sand, which glitters beautifuly in the moonlight at night.
5th Place: Finikounda on the Peloponnese
Closing the top 5 favorite beaches of Greek families, with 26 percent of the votes, is Finikounda Beach. You can find this original fishing village in the southwestern Peloponnese between the ancient towns of Methoni and Koroni. Besides families with small children who enjoy splashing and snorkeling, the calm waters of the beautiful bay are home to a variety of fish species.
The village center is right by the bay, with only a few steps between the beach, bars, and numerous restaurant terraces. Additionally, the small fishing harbor, located right next to the beach, presents a particularly picturesque scene.
