From west to east Italy, here is a guide to the sea in Italy and the most beautiful beaches by region. The Ligurian Sea is the northernmost part of the western Mediterranean from Nice to Piombino. From Punta Melito, the Calabrian coasts are washed by the Ionian Sea (which bathes the entire east coast of the region) and are characterised by wonderful, wild beaches. From the south, going up the east coast of Italy, we find the beaches of the Ionian side of Basilicata and the beaches of Apulia, washed by both the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic Sea.
From Punta Palascia in Otranto to the mouth of the Po, the coasts are washed by the Adriatic Sea. The beaches here are very similar, straight and shallow. They are interspersed with the marvellous corners of paradise that lie behind Monte Gargano and Monte Conero.

Going to the seaside with children requires a bit of organisation. A lot also depends on the age of the children; treks to the most remote beaches and bays are not recommended, at least in the early years, as they may be too strenuous. Ideally, one should choose shorelines with shallow water.
