Sea in Italy

Sandy beaches, hidden and secluded bays, white beaches and rocky and pebbly shores: from north to south, Italy boasts one of the most beautiful and envied seas in the world, characterised by crystal-clear waters, wide stretches of coastline perfect for children, bays protected by imposing rocks, paradisiacal islands, cities of art and seaside villages that are absolutely worth a visit. If you love secluded and hidden stretches of coastline, we have selected the most beautiful secret beaches in Italy.

From west to east Italy, here is a guide to the sea in Italy and the most beautiful beaches by region. The Ligurian Sea is the northernmost part of the western Mediterranean from Nice to Piombino. It washes the most beautiful beaches in Liguria and a stretch of the Tuscan coast; that of Versilia and the Costa degli Etruschi, as far as the Gulf of Baratti.

Continuing southwards along the peninsula we find the beautiful stretch of coastline washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea, where you will find the most beautiful beaches in Tuscany, in the stretch from Piombino to the Gulf of Gioia, along the Grosseto Maremma coastline; the beaches in Lazio and those in Campania, the most beautiful beaches in Basilicata (in the stretch of the Lucania Tyrrhenian coastline) and those in Calabria, as far as the Strait of Messina.

From Punta Melito, the Calabrian coasts are washed by the Ionian Sea (which bathes the entire east coast of the region) and are characterised by wonderful, wild beaches. From the south, going up the east coast of Italy, we find the beaches of the Ionian side of Basilicata and the beaches of Apulia, washed by both the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic Sea.
From Punta Palascia in Otranto to the mouth of the Po, the coasts are washed by the Adriatic Sea. The beaches here are very similar, straight and shallow. They are interspersed with the marvellous corners of paradise that lie behind Monte Gargano and Monte Conero.
Along this stretch of coastline you will find the beaches of Molise, the most beautiful beaches of Abruzzo, the beaches of Marche, the beaches of Emilia Romagna, those of Veneto and those of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Then there are the coasts of the beautiful Italian islands: the Sicilian coast is characterised by a mountainous and jagged part (in the northern and eastern parts) and a low coastline (in the western and southern parts).

The Strait of Messina is where the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ionian Sea separate. To the south and south-west, Sicily is washed by the Strait of Sicily that separates it from Africa. A guide to Sicily's most beautiful beaches can be found here.
The coast of Sardinia is washed to the north by the waters of the Bocche di Bonifacio that separate it from Corsica, to the west by the Sardinian Sea and to the east by the Tyrrhenian Sea. If you are thinking of spending the summer on the island, here is a guide to the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia.

Sea in Italy for children

Going to the seaside with children requires a bit of organisation. A lot also depends on the age of the children; treks to the most remote beaches and bays are not recommended, at least in the early years, as they may be too strenuous. Ideally, one should choose shorelines with shallow water.
The coast along the Adriatic Sea boasts wide sandy shores and shallow waters; you can choose from the beaches of Abruzzo and stop at Punta Penna. It is a wild beach (not very suitable if you are travelling with babies) but perfect for children, thanks to its shallow waters. Also recommended are the beaches of the Costa dei Trabocchi.
The Marina di Pescoluse beach is located in Salento and is characterised by shallow waters and tarry water, so tarry that it has earned it the title of the Maldives of Salento. Here you will find our guide to Salento beaches recommended for a holiday with children.
There are also beautiful beaches in Sardinia with transparent waters and a low, sandy shoreline. Here we have selected children's beaches in Italy, a useful guide for those going to the seaside with children.

Where to go on a cheap beach holiday in italy?

Are you thinking of cheap holidays for next summer? In Italy there are many locations off the tourist track where the sea is spectacular and the prices are modest.
One example is Calabria, with wonderful beaches, not very touristy and absolutely low cost. Basilicata, too, hides heavenly spots that are uncrowded and absolutely cheap. Immediately after the Amalfi Coast, there is a stretch of coastline worth discovering: the Cilento coast, protected by the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, where you will find bays, coves and secret beaches (here are the most beautiful beaches in Cilento).
