10 - Via degli Abati, Emilia Romagna / Tuscany - Northern Italy

A beautiful historical path, with origins in the High Middle Ages, which runs along theTuscan-Emilian Apennines, passing through the provinces of Pavia, Piacenza, Parma and Massa Carrara. The route is quite demanding: with an altitude difference of almost 6,000 metres, it winds along paths, mule tracks, cart tracks and crosses valleys and ridges.

9 - Antica Via Valeriana, Lombardy - Northern Italy

A splendid ancient route linking Lake Iseo and Val Camonica, recently rediscovered and undergoing renovation. The Via Valeriana is mostly cobbled and passes through ancient villages, with views of the picturesque Lake Iseo, Brescia shore. The route lends itself very well to photography enthusiasts.

8 - Blue Trail, Liguria - Northern Italy

  • Length: 12 km

  • Duration on foot: 6 hours

  • Recommended for: All

Trail that crosses all the villages of the Cinque Terre, unfortunately currently closed in sections due to numerous landslides. Access to the trail is subject to a fee, ranging from 5 to 7 euros.

7 - The Lemon Trail, Campania - Southern Italy

  • Walking time: 5 hours

  • Recommended for: Everyone

A fairly simple route, suitable for the whole family. The height difference is 410 m and you can admire the incredible views of the Amalfi coast, with its gardens and lemon groves. The recommended period to walk it is 12 months of the year, always with suitable clothing according to the period. A stop at Ravello is recommended.

6 - Tratturo Magno, Abruzzo / Molise / Apulia - Southern Italy

A sheep-track is a grass, stone or beaten earth path created by the trampling of animals: the Tratturo Magno, which connects L'Aquila to Foggia, is the longest of the Italian sheep-tracks. Places of interest along the route include the archaeological site of Peltuinum and the Palace of the Sheep Customs in Foggia.

5 - Great Traverse of the Alps, Piedmont - Northern Italy

An excursion that winds its way from Domodossola to the Ligurian Alps and is divided into 55 stages, each lasting between 5 and 8 hours. The route is designed to be walked from south to north.

3 - Via degli Dei, Emilia Romagna / Tuscany - Northern Italy

An ancient trekking route connecting the cities of Bologna and Florence, passing through the Apennines. A truly suggestive view in the midst of nature, to be enjoyed on foot or by mountain bike. The route was reconstructed in the 1990s, restoring places of great natural interest. The 6 stages are recommended.

2 - Ponale Road, Trentino-Alto Adige - Northern Italy

An old road that connected Lake Ledro and Riva del Garda going up the valley of the Ponale torrent. Used for car traffic until 1995, when the variant was built, since 2004 it has been reopened as a cycle path and footpath. It offers incredible views of Lake Garda and is very popular with mountain bikers.

  • Walking time: it takes 68 hours to complete the route from the North (to be divided into 10 days)

The Via di Francesco wins our ranking, a spiritual itinerary (but not only) to retrace the footsteps of St Francis of Assisi. You can start from the north, from La Verna via Città di Castello, Gubbio and Perugia, or from the south, from Greccio via Piediluco, Spoleto, Trevi and Spello. The route has some easy stretches and some more challenging ones.
