It sounds tempting: Making a roll to go from the breakfast buffet while on vacation, wrapped in a napkin to take with you. After all, there's plenty of food! But is it allowed? We've investigated.

For many travelers, a hearty buffet breakfast is key to starting a new vacation day off right, with the motto being to enjoy leisurely indulgence. Faced with all the delicious options, some might be tempted to pack a sandwich for later and have a Ziploc bag at the ready. There's plenty of food is one of the commonly cited reasons.

However, this assumption overlooks the fact that hotels have carefully calculated the amount and price of the buffet. The calculations are based on what is consumed directly at the restaurant, not what travelers stash away for later.

Taking food is not permitted, but nobody goes hungry

In reality, packing away food from the breakfast buffet is a widespread bad habit that you shouldn't follow. The legal situation is clear: 'Taking food and drinks from the breakfast restaurant is not permitted,' explains attorney Jürgen Benad from the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (Dehoga). Thus, the buffet items are meant for immediate consumption in the hotel restaurant.

Even the argument that the food on the plate would end up in the trash anyway doesn't hold up. Conscientious diners only take what they need and go back for seconds if necessary.

That's why many hotels have signs on the tables indicating that no food should be taken from the breakfast buffet. If hotel staff notices someone pocketing something, they'll remind the person of the policy.

However, nobody has to go hungry. Many hotels overlook a single piece of fruit being taken. Others provide a bowl of apples, bananas, and mandarins at the reception where guests can help themselves at any time. Moreover, many hotels are happy to prepare a lunch package for guests upon request, including hotels from the Radisson and Meininger groups.

An exception: Tui's all-inclusive offers

There seems to be an exception for all-inclusive packages from Tui. In the Robinson Clubs, for example, the travel organizer has adjusted to its active guests, who often engage in sports or excursions during the day. Here, packaging materials are available at the breakfast buffet so that vacationers can prepare their lunch package.

Additionally, many Tui hotels offer an all-inclusive meal plan with grab-and-go stations where guests can access food and drinks around the clock.

When in doubt, it's always best to ask! If you'd like a snack to go, just ask the service staff or at the reception, and there will surely be a solution.
