In Philadelphia, a $48 million transit-oriented development, which is hoped to include medical offices, a café, other retail, and 164 apartments, has been announced for land near Temple University currently used as surface parking.“With SEPTA trains rumbling behind him, Mayor [Michael] Nutter hailed the development as one of the city’s biggest efforts to promote a lifestyle in which people can walk, ride bikes, or take public transportation,” The Philadelphia Inquirer reported in June.

The station near Temple is one of the city’s busiest, with access to many train routes. Planners hope the development will reduce the number of people driving. The Jonathan Rose Companies of New York will oversee the project, which has been advocated for years by Asociación Puertorriqueños en Marcha, a neighborhood development group. Senator Robert Casey Jr. secured $487,000 in federal economic development funds. The Citi Foundation, a nonprofit arm of Citigroup, provided a $125,000 grant. More than a quarter of the apartments will be designated as affordable.
