Twenty-three entries are finalists in the Build a Better Burb competition, aimed at generating ideas for retrofitting downtowns on Long Island, New York. The competition is associated with the Long Island Index, a project that gathers and publishes material concerning Long Island, New York. “There is a great range in design sensibility and scope in the proposals — some new urbanist and many not (or not apparently so),” says the jury coordinator, June Williamson, who teaches architecture at City College of New York and co-authored Retrofitting Suburbia with Ellen Dunham-Jones of Georgia Tech.

Winners will be announced Oct. 7. Voting is now taking place for the People’s Choice Award. To view entries and to vote, click on www.buildabetterburb.org.
